Belle Riviere was the first European name of the Allegheny River on which Warren, Pennsylvania is situated. "Belle Riviere" is a direct translation of the Seneca name, "Ohiyo," from which came the name for the Ohio River downstream.
Motorists on Route 86 in New York State can still see the original Native American name (Ohiyo) on the roadside as they enter the Seneca Nation at the upper Allegheny River. Warren Pennsylvania and the Kinzua Dam make a nice vantage point to enjoy these wonders of nature.

Belle Riviere attempts to bring back the tradition of the photo-gravure, a Victorian-era type publication which illustrates a common theme through photographic essays, in this case using Warren Pennsylvania and the Kinzua Dam as a hub.
The theme here is the beauty of the Kinzua region in and around Warren County in the northwest part of the state. In Maine, a popular phrase is "You can't get there from here." Around here, it might be "You can't get here from there." There is no interstate highway nearby nor any quick connection to one. This has served to protect natural attractions in the area because so few people know about it or travel through it.
Because of this relative isolation, the Warren, Pennsylvania area maintains a cornucopia of outdoors possibilities, with possibly unlimited potential for hunting, fishing, boating, camping, hiking, bicycling, canoeing and kayaking (which we call "paddling"), snowmobiling, off-road (ATV) touring, and backpacking, just to name a few. If you can do it outdoors, there are few things you can't do here in our half-million acre woods. |
