   Canoeing and Kayaking
   the Allegheny River
   and Kinzua Lake:
Historic,  Wild,  and Scenic
87 miles of the Allegheny River have been
designated a National Wild and Scenic River.
There are more than 100 islands from the Kinzua
Dam to Oil City and 7 of them constitute the
Allegheny Islands Wilderness.

The U.S. Forestry Service has identified about 135
potentially significant historic and prehistoric sites
on the Allegheny and 4 of them are already on the
National Register, including an American
Revolutionary War battle ground. For more
detailed info, read a
recently published canoeing
guide.

The river from Kinzua Dam to Warren has become
a favorite for canoe racers. Warren will host the
USCA National Canoe Races  a fourth time in
August 2009.  There are at least
5 canoe outfitters
and transporters in Warren, Tidioute, Youngsville,
and Tionesta.

In Warren two new boat and canoe launches will be added soon at Betts Park and at Point
Park where the Conewango Creek joins the Allegheny River. Next year a 150-year-old dam
will be removed near the mouth of the Conewango Creek which will allow navigation up
and down the creek which runs about 20 miles south from New York state.
