Here is an early Fall view of the Allegheny River from the East Side of Warren, Pennsylvania. Photo was taken
from the Glade Run Bridge which marks the eastern city limit of Warren. This is just downstream from
Hemlock Eddy. You can just get a glimpse here of Allegheny Outfitters, which provides canoe rentals and a
convenient canoe livery service. It is located on the north (left bank) just behind the trees.
The trees on the right are on an island which splits the river before it runs under the bridge, so this shows
only the north side of the river which is twice as wide as you see here. The canoe livery service takes canoers
up to the dam where they can float down for about 6 miles to this location and drop off their canoes. Or, longer
trips downstream to Buckaloons and Tidioute are also available. This photo was taken Oct. 4, 2005. From
here, you are just a short paddle to the Conewango Creek and Point Park in downtown Warren, Pennsylvania.
This was the spot where the neighborhood kids used to bring their old innertubes to float down the river in
the 20th century. We always stopped at the refinery to hunt for mudpuppies, which are the largest
salamanders you ever saw, as big as a poodle. We also ran across some very large water turtles and an
occassional box turtle would trek up into the East Side streets. I caught my best large mouth bass fishing by
the light of the "torch" at the refinery one night.
