   This is "Western Pennsylvania's
favorite float stream," according to
Canoe Camping - USA. Tailwaters of the
Kinzua Dam mark the northernmost point of the best
navigable part of the Allegheny River in
Pennsylvania. Waters behind the dam flow originally
from Potter County, Pennsylvania then into New York
State and back into Pennsylvania through the
Allegheny Reservoir.
On the left of the photo is a hydro-electric station.
The light blue tents on the right hand shore are a
national fish hatchery, which is open to the public
and accessible by Hemlock Road inside Warren,
Pennsylvania.
The Kinzua Dam created the Allegheny Reservoir
which  increased the area's popularity for hiking,
camping, fishing, canoeing, kayaking and hunting.
The dam was built in the 1960s as a flood control
project. It supplies enough electricity that a local
coal-burning power plant is no longer needed. Plans
had been made to convert it into
The Allegheny
Musarium
, not far from the local tourists' vacation
center for the
Northern Alleghenies Vacation
Region
. But the expense to clean up the site on the
river where the power plant sits may be prohibitive.
