Peyton Randolph was the most powerful founder of our country you
probably don't know about because he died from a stroke just
before the Declaration of Independence at age 54. He was the first
President of the Continental Congress and led his colony to be the
first to declare independence from England. Inside this house lived
27 slaves. This is where they worked, slept, and learned to read
and write. Randolph was a lawyer whose manservant Johnny
served as his aide. Johnny left the household after Randolph died
and the British proclaimed that African-Americans would be freed if
they joined the British Army. England made great efforts to project
its dominion over the colonists, especially through the grandeur of
its royal palace, on the next page.
