Urban life in 18th Century Williamsburg, Virginia
Welcome to urban 18th Century America.
Williamsburg, Virginia was the capital of
Virginia and the seat of Royal power for the
colonies. Most residents of this city were
servants and African-Americans, who were
owned as property. An excellent place to start
your tour is the Peyton Randolph house, one
of the oldest original structures, built in 1717.
Here a member of Colonial Williamsburg's
African-American Ensemble guides you
through the everyday life for most local
residents. Through simple role-playing,
visitors get a chance to put themselves in
other's shoes for a moment, transporting you
back to pre-Revolutionary America and
preparing you for a complete Williamsburg
experience. Click here to learn about Peyton
Randolph and his household from our guide.
