Uncrowded recreation. At one time this was the most popular spot for
families in the area, but it was recently closed down. Now, local civic leaders
hope to re-open it. Traffic used to back up for miles to get in and the U.S.
Forest Service actually charged admission to enter the beach. Recent
federal budget constraints have caused the forestry service to close the
area's largest beach as well as the nearby visitor's center.
Reportedly, both facilities have broken septic systems that are 40 years
old and the forest service cannot staff the facilities under its current budget.
Some local leaders are proposing a partnership with the forestry service so
that the community can take on more of the responsibility of restoring this
outstanding recreation opportunity.

At the height of its
popularity in the 1960s,
Kinzua Beach (see
map) featured a sandy
beach, a full-service
concession stand,
picnic tables, grills,
changing rooms and
showers. It may re-open
next year under limited
usage, including
port-a-jons.
Most summer
business has now gone
to Chapman State Park
near Clarendon, PA, the
Onoville Marina (near
the Seneca Nation),
Allegany State Park in
New York, and to an
improved campsite at
Willow Bay, near
Bradford, PA.
