The Kinzua Lake Region spans five different counties in New York and Pennsylvania. Officially
known as the Allegheny Reservoir, Kinzua Lake was formed in 1965 with the construction of the
Kinzua Dam on the Allegheny River at the location of a village called Kinzua. The region is
comprised of the northern Allegheny River watershed and Allegheny National Forest in Warren,
McKean, Elk, and Forest Counties in Pennsylvania and Allegany State Park in Cattaraugus
County in New York. It includes 5 lakes: Red House Lake, Quaker Lake, Kinzua Lake, Chapman
Lake, and Tionesta Lake.

Notable features of the area include the Seneca Nation, headquartered in Salamanca, New York
and a half-million acre Allegheny National Forest, which has its headquarters in Warren,
Pennsylvania. The national forest includes several wilderness areas and includes Pennsylvania's
only remaining virgin forest.

The Kinzua Dam was built primarily to prevent flooding in Pittsburgh. Regulation of the water flow
has made this section of the Allegheny River one of the nation's premier flat-water canoeing sites
and Warren, PA has hosted multiple state and national canoe competitions.

The lake is the site of the annual Pennsylvania Fishing Championship, held each year in
September out of Tidioute, PA. Kinzua Lake holds state records for largest Northern Pike and
Walleye.
